Yamaha E01 Electric Scooter: A New ERA of Urban Commuting

The Yamaha E01 Electric Scooter is a proof of concept (PoC) model that highlights Yamaha’s commitment to developing electric vehicles (EVs) that offer a quality ride exceeding that of conventional scooters. The E01 is an urban commuter model that combines Yamaha’s scooter and EV technologies to bring practicality to everyday use. The scooter has a power output comparable to a 125cc scooter engine, making it fast-charge compatible and providing plenty of range and comfort when going from one area of the city to another.

The E01 is equipped with a high-speed air-cooled permanent magnet-embedded synchronous motor (IPMSM) developed exclusively for motorcycles. Yamaha’s unique “flat square thick winding technology” and “casting technology and processing technology” have been combined to achieve high efficiency. As a result, the air-cooled motor for two-wheel EVs has the industry's highest output/torque density and high efficiency. The maximum torque is 30Nm in the low-speed range from start to 1,950r/min, and the maximum output is 8.1kW/5,000r/min, demonstrating output over a wide speed range.

The E01 is without a clutch and starts instantly when you twist the accelerator, making starting and accelerating performance equal to or better than the 125cc scooter “NMax” in terms of acceleration from 30km/h (to the 100m passing point), acceleration from zero to 400m, and the ability to start uphill.

Low vibration and quiet driving characteristics are also prominent features of the E01. The E01 has a belt drive system and low-noise tires, achieving extremely quiet riding with almost no vibration or mechanical noise.

The large-capacity 4.9 kWh battery that supports a driving range of 104 km on a single charge is a vehicle fixed battery developed and assembled in-house exclusively for motorcycles. The battery case is made of CF aluminium die-cast, and like the motor, the combination of casting technology and processing technology that Yamaha has cultivated over many years has resulted in a large-capacity, compact, and lightweight battery.

The charging connector is placed on the front of the vehicle to facilitate charging when the scooter is parked. The battery charging supports three types of chargers: “rapid charger”, “normal charger”, and “portable charger”.

The Yamaha E01 Electric Scooter is a new concept design that contrasts the “cleanliness of an EV” with the “robustness of a motorcycle”. The design is based on human-machine interface perspectives such as “dynamic”, “passenger”, and “commuter”. The colour is pure white with a solid pearly feel, and the moulding expresses a clean, modern and rich impression. 

LED lights are used for all lighting, such as headlamps, position lamps, flasher lamps, and tail and stop lamps, forming a stylish and sophisticated look. The driving modes can be selected according to driving conditions, including “PWR” (power mode), which maximizes the power of the motor, and “ECO” (economy mode), which prioritizes energy conservation.
