Woodlands Checkpoint Now Allows Motorcyclists to Use Automated Car Lanes for Faster Immigration Clearance

Good news for motorcyclists travelling from Singapore to Johor Bahru! From 15 October 2026, motorcyclists and their pillion riders can use selected car lanes at Woodlands Checkpoint for automated immigration clearance when departing Singapore.
The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has introduced this initiative to improve traffic flow, increase clearance capacity and reduce waiting times for motorcyclists, particularly during peak travel periods.

Faster Motorcycle Clearance at Woodlands Checkpoint
Motorcyclists travelling through Woodlands Checkpoint can now benefit from automated immigration clearance at selected lanes previously used for manual car clearance.
According to ICA, trials have shown that the automated system can reduce clearance time by approximately 10%, or around two seconds per motorcycle, compared with manual clearance.
While the time saved per motorcycle may seem small, the larger benefit comes from increased clearance capacity.
With automated systems, more lanes can operate without requiring an ICA officer to be stationed at every lane. This allows more motorcyclists to be processed efficiently, especially during busy morning and evening periods.
For riders who frequently travel between Singapore and Johor Bahru for work, business or leisure, the additional clearance capacity could help ease congestion at the checkpoint.
How Does Automated Motorcycle Immigration Clearance Work?
The new system uses facial recognition technology to verify the identities of motorcyclists and their pillion riders.
Unlike conventional manual immigration clearance, where travellers interact with an ICA officer, the automated system allows eligible riders to complete immigration checks electronically.
Here are the four steps motorcyclists need to follow:
Step 1: Raise Your Helmet Visor
Before entering the automated clearance lane, motorcyclists and pillion riders must raise their helmet visors.
Sunglasses and face masks must also be removed to allow the facial recognition system to capture their faces accurately.
Step 2: Insert Your Autopass Card (Foreign-Registered Motorcycles Only)
Riders of foreign-registered motorcycles must insert their Autopass card into the designated reader.
Singapore-registered motorcycles do not need to complete this step.
Step 3: Scan Your MyICA QR Code or Passport
Motorcyclists can scan their immigration QR code generated through the MyICA mobile application or use their passport for clearance.
Riders should prepare their QR code or passport before reaching the automated system to minimise delays.
Step 4: Complete Facial Recognition Verification
Motorcyclists and pillion riders must look towards the biometric scanning screen.
The system can capture and verify up to two faces simultaneously, allowing both the rider and pillion passenger to complete immigration clearance together.
Once their identities have been successfully verified and clearance is granted, they can proceed to exit the lane.

Who Can Use the Automated Motorcycle Clearance System?
According to ICA, facial recognition clearance is available to:
Singapore residents
Long-term pass holders
Foreign visitors who have previously entered Singapore
Travellers must meet the applicable immigration requirements and follow the instructions displayed at the automated clearance system.
Will This Reduce Motorcycle Traffic Jams at Woodlands Checkpoint?
The introduction of automated motorcycle clearance is a positive development for riders who regularly experience heavy traffic at the Singapore–Malaysia border.
However, a 10% improvement in individual clearance time does not necessarily mean a 10% reduction in overall waiting time.
Actual waiting times will continue to depend on several factors, including traffic volume, the number of operating lanes, immigration processing capacity and congestion at both the Singapore and Malaysia checkpoints.
Nevertheless, allowing motorcycles to use selected car lanes provides ICA with greater flexibility to manage checkpoint traffic and increase motorcycle clearance capacity during busy periods.
Important Reminder for Motorcyclists Travelling to Johor Bahru
Motorcyclists planning to use the new automated lanes should remember that the arrangement applies to selected car lanes at Woodlands Checkpoint when departing Singapore.
It does not mean that motorcyclists can enter every car lane or that the same arrangement applies automatically at Tuas Checkpoint or the Malaysian immigration complex.
Riders should follow ICA's lane signs, traffic instructions and directions from checkpoint officers.
A Welcome Improvement for Singapore Motorcyclists
With thousands of motorcycles travelling between Singapore and Johor Bahru, improving immigration clearance efficiency is an important step towards smoother cross-border journeys.
The introduction of automated clearance in selected car lanes from 15 October 2026 gives motorcyclists and pillion riders another way to clear Singapore immigration, while allowing ICA to operate more lanes efficiently.
For regular cross-border commuters, even small improvements in processing efficiency can make a difference when combined with increased checkpoint capacity.
SGBikeMart will continue to bring Singapore motorcyclists the latest updates on checkpoint arrangements, motorcycle regulations, LTA announcements and local riding news.
