The motorcycle engine

Have you guys wondered how your motorcycle engine works?

Your engine consists of the spark plug, piston, engine block and the head. The intake and output of your engine will be processed by the valves, camshafts, crankshaft, pistons and rod in the repeated manner.

The camshaft will rotate and the intake valve will open to accept fuel and air mixture into the combustion chamber and the piston will act to mix this mixture. The piston will move up and down in the engine block and will ignite a spark in contact to the spark plug. Combustion will take place and the exhaust valve will open for the exhaust output. A new process will repeat after.

A video to show how the combustion chamber in slow motion works:

Motorcycle engines are normally classified by one of three characteristic. The numbers of cylinder the engine possess, the engine capacity and the number of stroke.

The Cylinder There are 4 types of cylinder engines. One cylinder, two cylinder, three cylinder and four.

One cylinder engine is known as singles. One cylinder is placed vertically with a spark plug and the cylinder is normally positioned horizontally. Like what you see those headers with only one output.

Two-cylinder engine are known as twin engines. The cylinders are configured differently. V-twin in a V shape as both of its cylinder moves upwards. L-twin engine that has one cylinder pointing horizontally forward and the Parallel twin cylinder are parallel to each other.

Three-cylinder engine are not as common but it gives a lot of power but requires many parts.

Four-cylinder engine, their cylinder are configured in an in line manner known as the in line four. These cylinders are also available in V twin configuration like the two-cylinder engine and also in square.

Strokes There are the two-stroke and four-stroke.

Four-stroke engine are commonly found in the motorcycles nowadays. It produces linear strokes of each piston. They will take care of the intake, compression, combustion and the exhaust. The engine is clean and reliable.

Two-stroke engine are different. The piston produces two linear strokes. It is more powerful as it achieve more than what a four-stroke engine can do. Two-stroke oil also know as 2T is an engine oil supposing used for the compression. The oil are mixed with petrol to be distributed throughout the engine for lubrication. The oil is burned along with the fuel as a oiling system. This results in increased exhaust emission with smoke. These engines are simple in mechanics and it is very light in weight but it needs constant maintenance and cleaning.

Engine capacity The size of the combustion chamber in the engine directly related to the output. Upper limit is about 1500cc and lower limit is about 50cc. It compromises that small motorcycle that is able to travel more per litre of petrol but gets a slower speed and bigger cc motorcycle travel lesser per litre but gets a faster speed.

Now you know how your motorcycle engine work and will not be blur when it comes to repairs.
