The Cost of High Fashion: YSL and Balenciaga Motorcycle Apparel, Yay or Nay?
Leather and boots – these are two staple pieces any fashionista has in his or her wardrobe. No matter the occasion, you can pair these two and you’ll immediately have an eye-catching ‘look’, or ‘outfit’ as the kids these days call it.
Even if you don’t ride a motorcycle, you can still appreciate these motorcycle apparels.
Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) are two high-end fashion houses that have two things in common: one, their headquarters are in Paris, and two, they both have motorcycle gear as their muse.
YSL’s motorcycle jacket is obviously in leather, featuring the classic side-zip and patches scattered all around the body with designs like red-and-white checkers, animal prints, and geometrically-cut colors and studs.
Meanwhile, Balenciaga’s SS17 collection includes motorcycle boots as part of their footwear optioned in all-black and a navy, beige and black iteration. Constructed from leather and PVC (polyvinyl chloride), the boots also feature distressed detailing, a metallic sole tip, buckle straps, and a white Balenciaga branding.
These two pieces exemplify the luxurious shabbiness first popularized by Yeezy, Kanye West’s collaboration with Adidas, in his ready-to-wear collection featuring immensely distressed shirts and jeans normally adorned by homeless street junkies but now worn by the likes of Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid.
The Balenciaga boots are US$2,200 (SG$2,940) while the YSL leather jacket is US$9,900 (SG$13,231).
