Receive up to $3,500 when Deregistering your Older, More Pollutive Bike
Are you the owner of a motorbike that was registered before 1st July 2003? If the answer is yes, then we have some news to share with you. Over the next 5 years, the National Environment Agency (NEA) will be offering up to $3,500 to owners of the aforementioned motorcycles to deregister their bikes. Now you may be wondering, why only bikes that were registered before this specific date? It is because these bikes emit up to 10 times more carbon monoxide and 30 times more hydrocarbons compared to the average Euro IV motorbike today, as the current European Emission Standards was not introduced at that time.

Hence, these bikes do contribute to a hefty amount of carbon monoxide emitted by motorcycles in Singapore (up to 40%), even when they only make up an estimate of 20% of Singapore’s motorbike population. Taking into regard the prevalence of Air Pollution today, which has an adverse effect on Global Warming, this new initiative is then part of Singapore’s efforts to reduce said pollutants in time for Singapore’s air quality target for 2020.
Before anything else, check if you are eligible for this particular scheme. As mentioned earlier, if your motorbike was registered before 1st July 2003, and has a valid 10-year COE as of 6th April 2018, you will be able to attain the monetary incentive as long as you deregister your vehicle on or before the 5th of April 2023. However, do note that as of 6th April 2018, if your motorbike is under the 5-year non-renewable COE, or the Classic, Vintage (Restricted) and Revised Vintage Vehicle Scheme, you will not be eligible for this incentive.
So how does this incentive work?

This incentive has 2 aspects to it; firstly, the owner of the eligible motorcycle will be able to receive $2000 once the motorcycle is deregistered any time before 6th April 2023. Secondly, if your vehicle’s COE was not renewed on or after 7th April 2018, you will receive an additional $1,500 as well as a rebate for the unused COE period upon its deregistration. If you are still unsure of anything, the NEA will be notifying eligible motorcyclists via letter by the end of this month. In the meantime, do take this period to ride your bike for the last time as they will not be allowed on Singapore roads after 30th June 2028, and all the best for the incentivisation scheme if you choose to deregister your bikes!
