NUS students converted petrol based usage engine to electric based

Posted On : 10-07-2014

Student from National Students from the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) University Scholars Programme (USP) has successfully converted a petrol based usage engine to electric based which is made possible to extend the life of an old motorcycle.

Today, the world has constantly promoting on "Going Green" and with more greener technologies. This project, in collaboration with USP and the Engineering Design and Innovation Centre at NUS creates more possibility to convert motorcycle to electrical ones. The team consist of 6 people, Mr Shreyas Rao and Ms Pek Yang Xuan, who are both 20, Mr Brian Teo and Mr Aloysius Seah, who are both 22, along with supervisors Associate Professor Martin Henz and Dr Joerg Weigl started the project in May 2012. By creating technology for electric motorcycle, the student estimated the average cost of an motorcyclist who rides approximately 38.5km per day at an average speed of 69km/hr which cost about $121.11 of petrol per month. With the electric motor, it would cost about S$29.79 which is a cheaper transport compared to a normal motorcycle.

They have designed and create a frame for the motorcycle that cost about S$3500 or maybe even lesser. It includes the all mounting point, an electric engine and two slots for batteries. We all wouldn't want our motorcycle to be out of battery isn't it? Currently the 10 years old Honda CBR400RR which is their prototype model runs on 2 acid lead pack of battery which is a allows the vehicle to travel 25km to 50km. It is interchangeable to allow it to travel more which means that the battery can be charge anywhere. The team hope to secure more funds to carry on their research in this electrical technology so they can test on longer-lasting lithium polymer battery and fully interchangeable battery packs. Congratulations to the NUS team who came out with the moving prototype. Would you be interested to change your engine to an electric engine? Images courtesy from TODAYonline.
