  1. Plan beforehand

Ever heard that clichéd quote, “Failing to plan is planning to fail”, by Allen Lakein? Well, here’s some news for you. It’s true. The best and most successful people are always the ones who have a vision. They’re able to see ahead, further than what’s in front of them, which means they react quickly to their environment. Those with a plan before mounting their bikes know what to do when sudden accidents unfold around them. They know clearly where they’re going. With a mental image of the best route to take, they waste no time in getting lost and are always punctual to wherever they’re headed.

  1. Schedule breaks regularly

Once you’ve been on the road for quite some time, your body will automatically tired. Your grip will loosen and you’ll find that you don’t have enough energy for the rest of your trip. To avoid trouble, veer your vehicle to the side of the road wherever it’s legal and turn off the engine. Just hit pause for a few minutes, let your mind and body relax, maybe drink water or take a few deep breaths. This increases your agility, sharpness, and awareness on the road.

  1. Manage your speed

Take your time and be smart about your decisions. Don’t just randomly try to outpace your fellow bike-riders for the sake of looking cool and experienced. You don’t have to prove your skill to them; and especially not in Singapore where you’ll probably end up with a large fine. Take it easy, work up to a manageable speed and maintain it. Being a hooligan will get you nowhere.

  1. Consider your actions

“Self-reflection is the school of wisdom,” said Baltasar Gracian. Reflect on how you rode that day and how it progressed. Think of how you can perform better as well as how you can be more considerate to other drivers. As was said in Step 1, you are not alone on the road. Be more thoughtful to others to make the experience more enjoyable and worthwhile.

  1. Learn again!

Learning is a never-ending process. You should always try to improve and hone your craft. Everything takes practice. Therefore, desire to train continuously. This will seriously benefit you in the future. You will build resistance, stamina, and more knowledge in motorcycling. Enrol in a refresher riding course at the Singapore Safety Driving Centre (SSDC) or Bukit Batok Driving Centre (BBDC). You could even ask your more experienced friends to teach you and train with you. The more the merrier!

Riding a motorcycle is more than just the feeling of the engine revving up beneath you or being one with your bike or feeling the breeze. To be a truly accomplished rider, you have to ensure your safety, continue being a student of your sport, be reflective, have a plan, and make wise decisions.

Happy riding!
