New set of conditions and changes for prospective motorists starting today about PDLs

Posted On : 01-12-2017

Starting today, December 1, Provisional Driving Licenses (PDLs) will no longer be valid for just six months but two years.

The Traffic Police have introduced a set of changes regarding driving licenses that will affect prospective motorists as of today, December 1, which are the extension of the period of validity of Provisional Driving Licenses (PDLs) to two years. Oh, they are now electronic too.

PDLs are necessary for learners to drive or ride in training circuits and on public roads. With the extended validity period of their PDLs, they will have sufficient time to acquire their full licenses. As the PDLs are now electronic, there is no more need for paper licenses as learners can simply submit their applications online via the Police@SG mobile app or www.police.gov.sg/e-services. Therefore, driving instructors are able to verify the validity of their students’ PDLs by a supplement of the student’s electronic status.

Meanwhile, the eyesight tests currently facilitated by the Traffic Police will now be conducted at driving centres after the applicant’s enrolment.

65-years-and-above individuals will also be required to pass a medical examination – a review of medical history, vision, hearing and mobility - when they apply or renew their PDLs to ensure they are physically and mentally healthy to operate vehicles on the road. Those who have met the requirements of holding a Qualified Driving Licence of another vehicle class need not have this medical examination.

Additionally, by 2019, stimulation training will become compulsory for all prospective learner drivers.

Starting the first quarter of 2019, the stimulation training will be made available at all three driving schools in Singapore, irregardless of whether they are already enrolled in a driving school or being taught by a private driving instructor.
