Kawasaki Unveils World's First Hydrogen-Powered Motorcycle at Suzuka Circuit
On July 20, Kawasaki Motors, a division of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Group, made history by conducting the world's first public demonstration run of a hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycle at Suzuka Circuit in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture, Japan.
This groundbreaking hydrogen ICE motorcycle is the result of research that began in March 2023, with test runs commencing earlier this year and leading up to this public demonstration.
The bike features a modified version of the 998 cm³ In-Line Four Supercharged Engine from Kawasaki’s Ninja H2, adapted for direct hydrogen fuel injection into the cylinders.
The chassis was designed to house hydrogen fuel canisters and an onboard hydrogen fuel supply system.
Hydrogen ICE motorcycles operate by combusting hydrogen, delivering the thrilling sound and pulsating sensation that riders crave, while primarily emitting water.
This innovation is part of Kawasaki Motors' carbon-neutral initiative, aiming to bring a practical hydrogen ICE motorcycle to market by the early 2030s as a sustainable option for riders.
Kawasaki Motors is a full member of HySE (Hydrogen Small Mobility & Engine Technology), a research association dedicated to advancing hydrogen technology.
HySE is actively engaged in fundamental research on hydrogen engines, hydrogen filling systems, and fuel supply systems to develop hydrogen-powered small mobility vehicles, including motorcycles.
In its commitment to enhancing the Kawasaki brand, Kawasaki Motors is dedicated to providing products and services that align with customer and societal needs. This includes efforts to achieve carbon neutrality and exploring all possibilities to ensure the happiness and joy of everyone connected to Kawasaki.
