Johor Causeway to Get Additional 25 Motorcycle Lanes for Congestion Reduction

Posted On : 06-02-2023

Johor Bahru: The Deputy Finance Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, recently announced that the proposal to add 25 more motorcycle lanes to the Johor Causeway would be presented to the National Budget Office.
This proposal comes after the state government requested funding from the Federal Government to increase the number of motorcycle lanes at the Causeway from 50 to 75. The Johor Mentri Besar, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, has brought this matter to attention, stating that the additional 25 motorcycle lanes will help reduce congestion at the Causeway.

In a press conference held after visiting the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Building, Ahmad Maslan explained that the infrastructure for the 25 additional lanes will cost approximately RM2.57mil.
He also stated that the National Budget Office would decide on funding for the proposal. The works, transportation, and infrastructure committee chairman of Johor, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, was also present at the press conference.

In addition to the increase in motorcycle lanes, several measures are being considered to ease congestion at the Causeway. One of these measures is to increase the number of lanes for lorries that are not carrying any loads from one lane to two lanes.
This will allow smoother and faster passage through the Causeway, reducing congestion. Another measure being considered is to increase the number of scanners for pedestrians from one to three. The budget for the two additional scanners has been allocated at RM1mil and is expected to be completed by June.

Furthermore, there is also a proposal to have a “single clearance system” between Malaysia and Singapore to ease congestion further. This system will allow quicker and more efficient passage through the Causeway, ultimately reducing wait times and improving the overall experience for travellers and reduce congestion at the Causeway.
