Hayden Gillim’s Crash Last August Proves Prevention is Always better than Cure
This incident proves the utmost importance of wearing all of your gear, not just the ones that make you look cool.
If you didn’t listen to your instructors to wear your helmet while riding, here’s why you should’ve.

Last August, privateer Superbike/Superstock 1000 racer Hayden Gillim crashed hard at MotoAmerica’s race event at the Pittsburgh International Race Complex. He tumbled into a tire barrier at high speed as his GSX-R1000 careened and cartwheeled all the way over the fence. Immediately, the race was red-flagged as Gillim required medical attention.
However, the Heavens opened for Gillim as, miraculously, he survived the crash mostly unscathed with no signs of a concussion and continuing to race the next day.
After being escorted to an awaiting ambulance, it was revealed at the hospital through a series of tests and a CT scan that nothing he suffered no critical damages except for bruising on various body parts.
See what we mean, now? Speed is cool, boys, but safety is sexier. Not only will you enjoy your ride more but you’ll also get to keep your precious life. It’s a win-win.

Here’s a video made by Bells’ crew to help illustrate better the benefits of the Flex liner’s design and how it performed during the crash. Take a look to see how one piece of safety apparel helped save a man’s life.
Gillim’s head was protected by the Bell Race Star helmet with a Flex liner which was designed to reduce rotational-force energy from affecting a motorist’s brain during a crash. After an inspection by Bell’s engineers, Gillim was lucky to have been wearing it as it “executed its job as it was designed to do”.
We suggest that you invest in a good piece of a helmet and other safety apparel, whether you’re a veteran or a rookie. Prevention is always better than cure.
