Girls Rule the Roads for International Female Ride Day
When the word “motorcyclist” is brought up, the image of a tattooed, rugged hunk clad in all leather, standing next to a Harley Davidson inevitable comes to mind for many people. Such is the unfortunate stereotype of being a motorcyclist, including the perpetuated idea that motorcyclists are mostly males. However, to the population of female motorcyclists, do not fret! This year, on the 5th of May, there will be the 12th edition of International Female Ride Day (IFRD) taking place all over the world.

Traditionally, the event will happen on the first Saturday of May every year, with the aim of “connecting women with cycling”. Created by motorcyclist Vicki Gray in 2007, it was initially planned to only be a national event, but word spread and it quickly became an international campaign in its first year. According to Gray, the International Female Ride Day “provides a platform to for women riders to bond with other women, develop friendships and continue to enjoy motorcycling!” Being the only campaign in the world for female riders, it has certainly struck a chord within many and this year will be no exception. With expectations of the event to be celebrated across Canada, USA, Australia, Brazil, India, England, Japan and China among many other countries, the 12th edition of the International Female Ride Day will be held on a large scale and hopefully grow to gain enough clout.

To the female riders in Singapore, this is your chance as well to participate in this event. No registration is required, simply grab your bikes and display the year’s logo (see in the picture above!) on your vehicle. Inspire others through this day by helping to alter preconceived notions of gender stereotypes in the motorcycling world and show off to the world your passion and skills in motorcycling. With just under a month left to the event, what are you waiting for? Grab your motorbikes and JUST RIDE!
