Eligible motorcyclists can clear immigration using facial recognition instead of fingerprint scanning at designated lanes.
Starting 26 January 2026, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) will begin a facial recognition clearance trial for motorcyclists at Woodlands Checkpoint. This trial will be conducted at two designated motorcycle lanes in the Arrival Zone and aims to allow eligible motorcyclists entering Singapore to clear immigration using facial recognition instead of fingerprint scanning.
This initiative is part of ICA’s New Clearance Concept (NCC), which seeks to make immigration clearance faster, more convenient, and contactless, while continuing to uphold Singapore’s high standards of border security. By leveraging biometric technology, the system is designed to reduce processing time and improve the overall experience for travellers who cross the land checkpoints frequently.

Who Can Participate in the Trial
The facial recognition trial is open to a wide group of travellers, including:
Singapore residents
Long-Term Pass holders
Foreign visitors who have previously entered Singapore
Importantly, no prior registration or setup is required to take part in the trial. Eligible motorcyclists can simply use the designated lanes during the trial period. ICA encourages participation, as feedback and usage data will help fine-tune the system before wider implementation in the future.
What Motorcyclists Can Expect at the Checkpoint
Clear signages will be installed at the designated motorcycle lanes to guide riders through the process. ICA officers will also be stationed on-site to provide assistance and ensure a smooth transition, especially for those using the system for the first time. Riders who are unsure or encounter issues will still be able to receive help, ensuring that border clearance remains safe and efficient throughout the trial.

How the Facial Recognition Clearance Works
The process has been designed to be simple and intuitive:
1️⃣ Scan your QR code or passport at the checkpoint
2️⃣ Lift up your helmet visor
3️⃣ Remove sunglasses and face masks, if any
4️⃣ Look directly into the camera for facial scanning
Once your identity is verified, you can proceed through immigration without the need for fingerprint scanning.
Why This Trial Matters for Motorcyclists
For motorcyclists, especially those who commute regularly between Singapore and neighbouring countries, this trial represents a significant step forward. Reducing physical contact points and streamlining checks can lead to shorter waiting times, less inconvenience, and a smoother riding experience at one of Singapore’s busiest land checkpoints. The trial also reflects Singapore’s broader push toward smart borders and digital transformation in travel processes.
