Emission Standards Tighten For Motorcycles
Emission standards for motorcycles will be tightened from 2018 onwards to meet the Euro 4 standards. Singapore currently adopts the Euro 3 standard, which was implemented just two years ago in 2014. The New Euro 4 standard will be applicable to bikes above 200cc in 2018, while being progressively phased to include those less than 200cc from 2020 onwards.
Minister Masagos Zulkifli announced these new measures to combat environmental pressures, as he said that motorbikes are “significant contributors to carbon monoxide and ozone.” The two gases are greenhouse gases, and are responsible for global warming.
It appears that Singapore is beginning to follow other developed countries in the implementation of tough emission standards. For example, India will impose Euro 4 emission standards nationwide by 2017, while Hong Kong has already implemented Euro 5 standards since 2012.
