A graduate of Bahauddin Zakariya University and holder of Master’s degrees in Political Science and Education, Mahjabeen Bibi travels from her house in Taunsa Tehsil to the far-flung D G Khan every day to teach at the only school in the area.
With a helmet over her Burqa, the 33-year-old lady is all set to ride her motorbike for a distance of 27 km. Regarding her daily commute, Mahjabeen mentioned in an interview with Geo News that she rides to the school alone every day, passing through an area that was once infested with terrorists. Some terrorists were killed in a raid by Rangers last year but the thought of their presence still haunts the area.
However, Mahjabeen still grits her teeth and gets past her fear, as she “prioritises fulfilling her duty” for the children at school. Students at the school say she comes for classes everyday even if there are extreme weather conditions, and is rarely ever absent for duty in her past 6 years of teaching.
Although the only female teacher at the government boys primary school (with the other teaching staff comprising of two males), her presence has motivated village girls to seek education there as well, as there are no schools for girls in that area.
Currently, the school has not yet started formally enrolling girls, who attend classes in civil clothes instead of uniforms. Things may start to change, though, with this amazing and dedicated female teacher at the helm.
