BMW Motorrad has revealed the BMW R 12 G/S GS Trophy Competition Bike, the machine that country teams will ride when the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2026 returns to Europe in late summer. This time, the adventure heads to Romania, where competitors will face an extraordinary mix of mountains, forests, rivers, remote villages and challenging natural terrain. The International GS Trophy has been held since 2008, and the latest competition motorcycle is based on the production BMW R 12 G/S but receives a carefully selected collection of accessories and equipment specifically suited to demanding off-road riding. Rather than transforming the R 12 G/S into an unrecognisable race machine, BMW has created a competition bike that stays remarkably close to something an enthusiast can recreate.

BMW R 12 G/S Forms the Foundation of the GS Trophy Machine
The competition bike starts with the rugged BMW R 12 G/S, a motorcycle created around BMW Motorrad’s classic boxer-powered GS philosophy. At its heart is the familiar 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine, producing 109 hp at 7,000 rpm and a maximum 115 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Its combination of strong torque, manageable power delivery and the characteristic low centre of gravity of BMW’s boxer layout makes the platform particularly well suited to technical adventure riding. For the GS Trophy, however, outright horsepower is only part of the equation. Riders will need precise control, durability, traction and confidence as they negotiate Romania’s varied surfaces, making the R 12 G/S platform and its off-road-focused setup central to the challenge.
Enduro Package Pro Prepares It for Serious Off Road Riding
BMW equips the GS Trophy Competition Bike with the Enduro Package Pro, bringing several important changes for demanding terrain. The package includes off-road tyres, an 18-inch rear wheel and handlebar risers, creating a setup better suited to standing riding positions, rough surfaces and challenging off-road sections. Protection is equally important in an event like the GS Trophy, so BMW adds engine protection bars and cylinder-head covers to safeguard the boxer engine during difficult sections or unexpected falls. A dedicated Rally cockpit fairing further strengthens the bike’s purposeful competition appearance, while navigation preparation helps support the adventure-focused role of the machine. Together, these additions transform the already capable R 12 G/S into a motorcycle prepared for the physical and technical demands awaiting the international teams in Romania.

Comfort Package Riding Modes Pro and Akrapovič Equipment
Despite its competition focus, BMW has not stripped away useful rider technology. The special R 12 G/S receives the Comfort Package, which combines Hill Start Control, Gear Shift Assist Pro, heated grips and cruise control. BMW also equips the motorcycle with Headlight Pro, including an adaptive cornering light, as well as Riding Modes Pro, giving riders additional electronic support for changing conditions. An Akrapovič silencer adds another premium element to the GS Trophy specification, while a 5-litre tank bag is repurposed as a rear bag to provide compact carrying capacity without interfering with the rider during technical off-road sections. The result is a thoughtful combination of competition-ready hardware, rider assistance and practical equipment rather than a machine focused solely on outright speed.
A GS Trophy Bike Enthusiasts Can Almost Recreate Themselves
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the BMW R 12 G/S GS Trophy Competition Bike is that it is not an unreachable one-off prototype. BMW states that the exact competition machine will not be offered for sale in this form, but customers can configure a standard R 12 G/S to closely recreate it using available equipment, with only minor differences such as the special decals. Its Lightwhite uni base colour is combined with blue tank tapes and a red seat, giving the motorcycle a distinctive BMW Motorrad Motorsport identity that immediately communicates its sporting off-road purpose. As the International GS Trophy heads into Romania’s mountains, forests, rivers and villages, this specially prepared R 12 G/S will become more than the teams’ transportation—it will be one of the essential tools through which their riding skill, precision, teamwork and adventure spirit are put to the test.
