Behind the Royal Wedding: Motorcycle Emergency Services

While everyone was cooing over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in Windsor, let’s not forget the people behind the scenes who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the big day went without a hitch.

Under part of the emergency services team are a couple of bikers from Cadent, who had to stand by with their motorcycles for any gas-related emergencies near the royal route.

Cadent is currently Britain’s largest gas distributor and describe themselves to be “a dedicated team of professionals, delivering gas safely and responding quickly” in times of emergency.
For this special occasion, the elite riders from Cadent were equipped with specially adapted BMW 1200 RT-Ps. These motorcyclists first volunteered to train as emergency bikers ready to penetrate any heavy traffic and investigate any suspected gas leaks as quickly as possible, and are now qualified as First Call Operatives.

As the performance and assurance manager at Cadent, Bryan Furness had to oversee the Royal Wedding preparations.

“Prior to the wedding we made thorough assessments to our local gas network to ensure it was sound and functioning correctly. We liaised with Windsor Castle and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to ensure any planned work to our network was either carried out beforehand or scheduled afterwards around the wedding,” Furness said.

The man added: “We had carefully developed contingency plans and resources such as the rapid-response motorcycle in place to ensure our engineers could deal with any suspected gas escapes as soon as possible.”

But while it may seem like a major event for Cadent (and it sort of is), it was still business as usual for the gas company.

Furness explained that in the end, “these major events are just one part of [their] work and Cadent is committed to ensuring [their] network keeps on delivering safe and reliable gas to all of the public who [they] serve.”

With all the glitz and glamour of the Royal Wedding, it is often easy to forget the hardworking people behind the scenes. Bravo to these motorcyclists who were part of the crew helping to keep things running for the wedding.
