Automatic Number Plate Recognition in the Works

Posted On : 09-05-2018

As can be seen in the video, the technology for license plate recognition is already pretty advanced. It has the ability to instantly capture and identify the vehicle’s identification plate, even if it is speeding down the expressway.

The video and post was published by ROADS.sg on Facebook on the 28th of April.

It states that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been testing the capabilities of the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera systems at various locations such as expressways, since April 2018. The testing will likely continue to 2019, as they are to assist LTA in determining the performance and reliability of these technologies under real life traffic situations.

The ANPR technology can be used for vehicle tracking, crime deterrent, security and parking services, traffic counting and control, electronic toll charges, road congestions charges and more. They will be used to facilitate enforcement.

Other technologies that may appear on our local roads in a couple of years also include the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which may be the alternative to the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP), as well as other test equipment to be mounted on various vehicles. There may even be facial recognition software installed into lamp posts across the island
