Everything you need to know about Aprilia - winner of nearly 300 Grand Prix races
Aprilia, headquartered in Noale, Italy, was founded in 1945 by Alberto Beggio after the Second World War.

Starting off as a humble bicycle manufacturer, it currently manufactures motorcycles and scooters. Ivano Beggio, Alberto’s son, took over the reins in 1968. They began to focus on building motorcycles, and at that same year, a 50cc engine bike was built. They also produced two small displacement mopeds, which received general acclaim by the public. Two years later, they built the Scarabeo, which shot Aprilia to stardom. It was used in competitions and had varying capacities ranging from 50-125cc.

Aprilia has performed exceptionally in the arena of road racing. Notably, at the Grand Prix World Championship, Italian Alessandro Gramigni won the 125cc race in the 1991 Czechoslovak Motorcycle Grand Prix, securing Aprilia’s first win in the 125cc class. In 1992, Alex Gramigni became the 125 World Champion, giving Aprilia their first road racing world championship title.
In the 250cc championships, Italian Max Biaggi emerged as a three-time world champion from years 1994-1996 astride an Aprilia RSW 250. In 1997, fellow Italian and current nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi finished first in the 125cc and Manufacturer Championship. Within the next two years, Aprilia proceeded to win the 250 World Manufacturer Championship twice.
In 2004, Aprilia joined the Piaggio Group which subsequently brought about the reorganisation of the Noale Racing Division. The acquisition resulted in a change to the President of Aprilia as well. This move proved excellent for Aprilia as the Italian motorcycle manufacturer proceeded to win another eleven world championships – six in 2006 and five in 2007.
In 2009, the RSV4, Aprilia’s flagship model, is released. The 999cc superbike was launched in view of the 2009 Superbike World Championship, and representing Aprilia is Max Biaggi.

By 2011, Aprilia has won 294 Grand Prix races and 38 championship titles. In that same year, they proceeded to win the Supermoto S1 World Championship. In 2013, Aprilia had the honour to be awarded the title of 2013 World Superbike manufacturer world champion. The following year, Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli earned the World Superbike Champion title for Aprilia, after a leg injury in 2009. Aprilia was the Manufacturer World Champion consecutively from 2012-2014.

The RSV4 has been the epitome of performance bikes – which, according to Aprilia, has proven its mettle by clinching 54 championship titles. RSV4 received an upgrade last year with notable additions such as a shock absorber and multimedia compatibility. The Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 is no slouch either – the 891cc engine provides smooth throttle response, easing your journey on the road. Not forgetting the Shiver 900 – a naked bike fitted with ride-by-wire technology.

Technology extracted from superbikes such as the RSV4 will be incorporated into motorcycles which can be ridden by the general public. The Aprilia Performance Ride Control (APRC) ensures superb control and performance for the rider. First and foremost, Aprilia Launch Control (ALC) enables riders to launch the bike instantly, by opening the throttle and slowly releasing the clutch before upshifting. Secondly, Aprilia Quick Shift (AQS) allows for extremely fast gear shifting (in 40ms). You can do away with the clutch and closing of throttle to boot.

Thirdly, Aprilia Traction Control (ATC) enhances safety and maximizes grip on the surface, aided by speed sensors. There are 8 varying settings which can be altered according to different surfaces (terrains) and style of riding. Lastly, Aprilia Wheelie Control (AWC) is able to detect whenever a wheelie is about to occur. AWC activates and temporarily shuts down traction control, controlling wheelies, thus maintaining acceleration. All in all, these help increase the rider’s safety on the roads while promising the rider greater control over the bike.
