During the 2018 SID Display Week, Silicon Valley-based company DigiLens announced that they have revolutionized AR displays through innovative waveguide optics and proprietary materials to create their eagerly anticipated two-layer augmented reality waveguide display.

Thinner and lighter, the MonoHUD aims to provide motorcyclists with “distraction-free content directly in their line of sight”, such that many facilities like maps, vehicle speed and fuel levels can be accessed without looking down at the smartphone.

Furthermore, DigiLens has also begun using a new inkjet coating manufacturing process that reportedly gives a significantly increased throughput, leading to lower cost. According to the press release, the “high efficiency of the DigiLens waveguide allows riders to see crystal-clear terrain, mixed with daylight-bright content ideal for outdoor applications - a game changer compared with other conventional display solutions.”

Introducing, the DigiLens MonoHUD:

Indeed, the MonoHUD AR display sounds more than impressive. Boasting a full colour display, tnHD image resolution, an unobscured user field-of-view of 105° and AR display field-of-view of 25°, this piece of technology can be guaranteed of optimum quality. There is also a maximum brightness of 8,000 nits and up to eight hours of battery life due in part to the exceptional waveguide efficiency.

“The increased quality of the two-layer display and the reduction in manufacturing complexity is crucial for our customers,” said DigiLens CEO Chris Pickett.

“It lowers the production costs and allows them to get product to market quicker. We are already seeing several innovative use cases like motorcycle HUDs and are seeking developers to show us what’s next.”

To bring this amazing product to life, DigiLens will be partnering with Bluetooth giant Sena to potentially build these motorcycle helmets with integrated audio-visual HUD systems. They will also be working with Young Optics - a leading display manufacturer - to integrate the DigiLens display and its communication system into the motorcycle helmets.

“We are proud to be working with the world’s top motorcycle and technology manufacturers in order to create innovative and cutting-edge solutions,” said Sena CEO Tae Kim. “By offering the MonoHUD display alongside our premium Bluetooth technology, we are giving riders a safe and next-generation riding experience and look forward to our continued work with Young Optics and DigiLens.”
