Zero Motorcycles’ Thieves Who Could Not Have Been Unluckier

Posted On : 19-04-2018

Motorcycle thefts is a criminal activity that has been increasing across the world. In fact, in the UK alone, there were over 14,000 bike thefts reported last year and this epidemic of crime has prompted mayor of London Sadiq Khan to call on manufacturers. “Design out motorcycle crime,” the mayor said. In other words, make bikes harder to steal.

And Zero Motorcycles has done exactly that.

Zero Motorcycles has liaised with British bike security firm Datatool to adapt its existing products to fit into the unique technical requirements of an electric bike. A trusted provider of vehicle security, Datatool’s philosophy is to “provide the highest quality products covering every aspect of motorcycle and scooter security plus a range of accessories to make your life as a rider an easier one,” and they may have proven it with this latest incident involving Zero.

Ironically, on the very same night that the two firms had signed an agreement to test the anti-theft devices on some electric bikes, the very same bikes were stolen. A couple of nincompoops had unknowingly decided to whisk away the bikes that were on anti-theft device testing duties at 3:37 AM. Less than 5 hours later, the theft was reported and from there, Datatool’s ‘trakking’ services were put into use.

The technology was used to hone in on the motorcycles’ exact location via GPS, and the stolen vehicles were subsequently recovered from under a tarpaulin a stone’s throw away from the van they were stolen from. The thieves really could not have been any more comically unlucky.

Well, at least now we know where to look to get anti-theft devices that actually work installed into our motorbikes.
