  1. Hup Hong Chicken Rice

Look no further if you are a big fan of a staple food in Singapore- chicken rice. It is no surprise to see a long serpentine queue in front of this stall during lunch time. The roasted chicken meat sold at this stall is soft and tender. Additionally, a topping of achar compliments the fragrant rice beautifully, providing the consumer with a tinge of sweetness in every bite. One of my personal favorites on the list, I strongly recommend the Roasted Drumstick Chicken Rice ($3.60). The stall also sells steamed chicken, char siew and gizzards.

One can never go wrong with a bowl of porridge to kick start your day. This unassuming stall located near the entrance of the market is popular among residents. The texture of the porridge is just right – neither too thick nor too runny. The Pork Porridge ($2.50) comes with a generous amount of minced pork, while the Century Egg Lean Meat Porridge ($3.00, pictured) is filled with pieces of chewy and aromatic lean meat. The stall also sells Sliced Fish Porridge ($2.50) and Shredded Chicken Porridge ($2.50). The toppings of fried shallots, spring onions and you tiao are just the icing on the cake. Or should I say, icing on the porridge?

  1. Ron Sheng Fish Head Bee Hoon

Another one of Singaporeans’ perennial favourite food is undoubtedly, a bowl of piping hot fish soup. Be prepared to queue for approximately 15-20 mins during peak hours at this stall. What stands out are the crispy fried fish slices (pictured above). One bite into the fish and you will be able to taste how succulent and well marinated it is. The sliced fish soup ($4.00) is no slouch either. It is filled with pieces of thick and freshly cut fish. This stall has been managed by an old couple for years! This comes with no surprise as the bowls of fish soup prepared daily speak volumes of their cooking skills. You can say they are no small fry (get the pun)?.

A fan of carrot cake? Be sure to drop by Seng Huat Homemade Fried Carrot Cake. The chef whips up the plate of carrot cake on a huge wok right in front of your eyes! Upon seeing the chef expertly slice the chunks of carrot cake, I can’t help but to salivate. The dish tastes just as good as it looks – not too oily, and the taste of chai po enhances the flavour of the dish. The dish is very affordable to boot – $2.50 for a plate is a steal. You can order White or Black carrot cake, depending on your preference.

West Coast Arifin Ali is a no-frills hawker stall which sells authentic Indian cuisine. Just by looking at the stall alone, it is clear that they are selling a cornucopia of staple Indian food – Briyani, prata, Mee Goreng, etc. Evidently from the picture above, this stall is well liked by Indians and Malays. The briyani is flavourful, and you are able to add on dishes of your choice as well, be it chicken, mutton, fish, vegetables- whatever whets your appetite. You are also able to see the chef prepare the food in front of you when you place your order. Anytime you feel like partaking in Indian cuisine, do head to this stall to try out their food.

  1. Fei Fei Roasted Noodle

In our honest opinion, this is one of the best wanton noodles that we have tried on our sunny island. People residing in all parts of Singapore flock to this humble stall to have a taste of Fei Fei Roasted Noodle’s highly raved charcoal roasted char siew. The char siew is charcoal grilled as early as 3am in the morning, to bring out its succulent taste and tenderness. The oh-so-delicious charred bits is beautifully complimented by the juiciness of every bite of char siew which explodes in your mouth. Not forgetting the springy egg noodles, as well as the delectable pieces of wantons packed with meat and prawn paste. Be prepared to queue for approximately 20-30mins, especially when the char siew are ready to be sold at around 1030am. Just a word of advice: The char siew usually sells out within 1.5 to 2 hours. The stall also sells Roasted Duck Noodle
