Meet The New M1000RR- BMW’s First M Motorcycle
The 200+ bhp Supersports segment just got hotter with the launch of the 2021 BMW M1000RR. The M badge was available on the S1000RR earlier as a Pro M package but was primarily limited to weight savings and electronic assists. The 2021 BMW M1000RR is a transformation with the famed M division’s techno-wizardry trickling down to its Motorrad division. The new 2021 BMW M1000RR shrinks the performance gap with its WBSK stable-mates on improvements spanning re-profiled hardware, electronics, and aerodynamics.

Engine
The existing S1000RR 999cc motor sees optimization with Mahle 2-ring forged pistons, lighter titanium valves, Pankl con-rods, and improvised intake geometry connected to a lightweight titanium exhaust unit. These enhancements result in an increased compression ratio standing at 13.5 against the S1000RR’s 13.2 and the redline further pushed to 15,100 rpm. Engine grunt has shifted north with the 2021 BMW M1000RR cranking out 212 hp @ 14,500 rpm. The torque remains unchanged at 113 nm that now arrives 500 rpm later at 11,000 revs.
Frame
The frame and swingarm have undergone revision for improved track performance. The rake angle marginally tweaked to 23.6 degrees resulting in a trail of 3.9 inches as compared to 3.7 on the S1000RR. The longer swingarm increases the wheelbase to 57.4 inches against the earlier 56.7 inches. Lightweight M carbon wheels are offered standard and claimed to be 3.7 pounds lighter while also reducing rotational mass. The new M1000RR is overall 11 pounds lighter than the S1000RR.

Braking
Braking chores are taken care of by the new M calipers manufactured by Nissin and developed through their racing experience in the WSBK championship. The twin 320mm rotors are now thicker, yet the overall braking unit on the M1000RR is lighter with improved braking performance. BMW is offering two variants on the brake pads with one for the road and one for track-oriented performance.

Aerodynamics
The winglets finally make it to the Bavarian Blaster. With clear-coat carbon fiber construction, the winglets offer 29.5 lbs of downforce at 300 kph mitigating front wheel lift while increasing traction. A taller windscreen adds better cocooning of the rider from high-speed wind buffeting.

Electronic Assists
The 2021 BMW M1000RR features 5 ride modes for varied riding conditions viz. Rain, Road, Dynamic, Race, and 3 Race Pro modes with two adjustable throttle curves for optimized engine response. The Pro mode further features 3 level engine braking maps. Other electronic aids include Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and DTC wheelie function with a 6-axle sensor unit. There’s launch control, pit-lane limiter, hill-start control pro, and a shift assistant Pro for clutchless shifts and reversibility of the shift pattern during track use.
However, it would be surprising if you still find the tech dripping M1000RR short of your expectations. If so, BMW offers an optional M competition package featuring an M-GPS lap trigger, M Carbon package, M milled parts package, a lighter swingarm, DLC coated M endurance chain, a passenger package with a tail hump cover.
To conclude, the 2021 BMW M1000RR with a formidable spec-sheet throws up a renewed challenge to the competition and aims to regain its coveted crown in the race for superbike supremacy!
