Yamaha unveils its first three wheeler. The Yamaha Tricity

Posted On : 10-07-2014

While for some of us motorcycles are the peak of excitement or a breath of liberty in a canned life this is not the case with everybody, actually, most of motorcycle users use a motorcycle as a way of transporting from point A to point B in the safest, quickest and most efficient way possible. We all know the advantages motorcycles offer us against cars, we are more agile, more mobile and we can usually avoid traffic jams by filtering between cars.

That's why Yamaha has released the Yamaha Tricity, again, another concept shown at EICMA 2013 that has now surfaced. At first look one might think it's similar to another models developed by other companies like Piaggio MP3 or the Peugeot Metropolis or the Gilera Fuoco, all of this three wheeler models offer a top notch security when leaning or breaking and offer an ample comfort that's not available on the rest of motorcycles, the main purpose of the Yamaha Tricity is the same but searching a lightness, sportiness, agility and ease of use as key elements. Yamaha seems to want to have an entrance on several markets that they "forgot" about, first we knew about the Yamaha YZF-R25, then it came the electric bike line, and now...the first Yamaha three wheeler, the Yamaha Tricity.

Urban users of motorcycle will find in the Yamaha Tricity a fresh, simple design that's very attractive for them, it's comfortable and its weight is not much different from the scooters in its segment weighting 152 kg in service (meaning with full tank of petrol and full oil and the rest of liquids). One of the features on the Yamaha Tricity is the use of a system called Leaning Multi Wheel or LMW, this system contains a suspension system with parallelograms this allow leaning the bike as a regular scooter, we also have two special cantilever forks that each one carries two independent bars. As braking goes we find that the Yamaha Tricity uses the system called Unified Braking System or UBS designed to maximize the breaking efficiency, meaning that if we press both brakes, front and rear, the system will automatically compensate the break so we don't go forward or back.

At first sight one might think that the engine of the Yamaha Tricity is the same one as the one in Yamaha X-Enter but it's slightly different. It's a 125 cc liquid-cooled, single cylinder that gives 11 ps. Its fuel deposit is able to handle 6, 6 liters and beneath the comfortable, very mushy and with anti-slide materials, two heights seat we can put our full face helmet. There's also a side stand and a center stand.

Our instrument panel is LCD one with the most usual info. Yamaha has not said any word yet if the Yamaha Tricity will be available on Asian markets but on Europe it will cost around 4000 euros. The colors available are going to be:

Anodized Red

Mistral grey

Competition White

Midnight Black
